Tutoring

Weekly volunteers partner with students to improve their academics and strengthen reading skills. Volunteers are encouraged to assist students in both 1:1 and virtual learning, play educational games, identify letters and letter sounds, read their school materials together, ultimately building relationships centered on Jesus’ love for His children.

Family Engagement

Parent/guardian involvement is vital to our students’ flourishing in school and life. We know that this relationship is of the utmost importance, and volunteers can never replace someone in the home. In an effort to support the family unit as a whole, we sometimes seek to provide occasional food assistance, parent mentoring and school supplies to families, as needed.

Holistic Activities

Character-building components of our holistic intervention program may include professional introductions, handshaking, discussions about manners and proper etiquette in specific settings, and more . Our students learn to be truthful at home, on the job, and while test-taking.

Training

Equipping our volunteer force to effectively serve our students and their families is paramount to our mission success. Therefore, the Newsome-Bailey team provides training to volunteers on key topics including: Reading and Writing; Cultural Diversity and Sensitivity; Covid Safety and Emergency Preparedness; Child and Youth Protection. These sessions equip volunteers with the skills needed to build healthy relationships with our students, their teachers and their parents.

* Volunteer Training Opportunities are offered during daytime AND evening hours; in-person and online. Please contact newsomebaileyexecutivedirector@gmail.com for details concerning training, or indicate interest when you sign up under our VOLUNTEER tab. Be aware that the HCS background check process includes fingerprinting, and may take a month to complete.

*ALL volunteers working with students receive a full background check.
